There is a rich heritage that comes from being born and raised on a family farm  like Zarpentines.  This place has been in Ron’s family (the Tabers, on his mothers side)  since the 1830’s.   Since that time the resources of the land have been used to provide food, clothing,  shelter and an education for generations.  It also provided much, much more as well.  Traditional Christian values such as hard work, respect for others, a love of God and family were tremendous benefits of this way of life.

The current generation, Ron and Pat Zarpentine bought the farm from Lon and Edith in 1992.  Ron knew from a very young age that this was the life for him. He never had a desire to work anywhere else, even through the lean years. He planted cash crops such as oats, wheat and field corn, and raised black Angus beef for a while.  But the bottom of both markets dropped in the early 1970’s, making it difficult at times to make ends meet.

Ron and Pat got married August 14th 1976. That was also the year they decided to make a shift in the way they farmed. That fall they opened up the retail farm market that still exists today. They shifted from the unpredictable market of cash crops,  to planting something that would be longer lasting and much more stable. They planted fruit trees, adding more acres every year until they came to the stage they are in now.  Over the years they also incorporated a cider press and bakery into their operation.

After 30 years the business is still thriving,  but they have noticed a definitive shift in the market.  When they first opened up, their biggest selling items were bushels of fruit.  Many people would purchase peaches, apples and pears by the bushel for preserving and canning as well as fresh eating.  But today’s consumer is looking for smaller quantities and quick and easy purchasing options.  The home baked fruit pies and apple fritters have been a close runner up to the sale of fruit in the last couple of years as well.

In predicting the future success and continuation of the family farm tradition at Zarpentines, Ron and Pat  are expanding their vision to incorporate new ideas and fresh approaches.  Part of this plan includes bringing in the next generation.  Daughter, Kim Francis has taken over the bakery and sales counter in the retail market bringing with her expertise, vitality and a refreshing approach to customer service.

The addition of the MAiZE to the farm a few years ago has given countless families the opportunity to enjoy some great family fun. This year’s maze will be quite challenging for even the most experienced maze-trekker, while offering the beginner or younger visitor a fun time, too. The “Corn-Cops” on duty will offer all the assistance anyone needs.
